Walled kitchen gardens in South Oxfordshire

Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat' Saisons

11 kilometres east of Oxford lies the village of Great Milton, home to the Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat' Saisons, the hotel and restaurant run by chef Raymond Blanc.

None of the gardens is walled. The vegetable garden is rectangular, roughly 36 metres by 88 metres and orientated north east/south west, with gravelled outer and cruciform paths. It is bounded by a stream to the north east, the herb and mushroom gardens to the south east, a border and wall of unknown date to the south west, and ponds to the north west. There is one modern glasshouse and several poly-tunnels beyond the herb and mushroom gardens to the south east.

The herb garden is designed like a medieval knot garden. At the centre are shaped box hedges and a water sculpture that bears a peacock. The mushroom garden or La Vallee de Champignons Sauvages, was designed in 2008 by Raymond Blanc, to grow mushrooms all year round for use in the hotel's kitchens. The heritage garden is adjacent to the herb garden and in the process of being developed as an ornamental garden that will join the herb garden and will feature heritage vegetables.
